A lot of my commercial reads are retail. Retail reads come in lots of different styles but they all do the same thing. Retail reads SELL a product. The style of retail read you choose is going to depend on the mediums you are using (TV, Radio or Online) and the demographic you want to sell to. If using TV or online retail advertising to sell your product you’ll also have visuals to help get your retail message across, but if you’re using radio you’ll have only one element. Either way, the sound of your retail message is fundamentally important in order to speak to your customers so that they sit up and take notice. A soft sell retail read will suggest, a medium sell retail read will state, and a hard sell retail read will urge. Within those three genres of retail reads, there are endless possibilities when it comes to delivery styles. For instance, a hard sell retail read does not have to be loud, rather it can sound super energised and excited without being over-projected, as though the voice talent is in a library trying to get the attention of someone a little too far away for a whisper without disturbing the other library users.
